KABIR'S, KOLKATA
Kabir's stands out as the first Turkish restaurant in Kolkata located at Ganesh Chandra Avenue. Every food item ranging from beverages to deserts is a Turkish delicacy.
Right from the entrance we can see Turkish decors. Turkish lamps are the epitome of exotic interior design, giving the house a touch of drama and mystique. They are made with cracked or broken pieces of glass.
Although the place was small, it had the perfect turkish atmosphere for enjoying the food.
One of the most remarkable items was Tuvak Kebap Platter (half or full) which had assorted chicken kebaps. There are usually 5-6 types of kebaps. Mutton Adana Kebap is prepared of minced mutton flavored with in-house spices, green herbs and grilled over charcoal. There is a unique taste to it.
One might be wondering the difference between kebaps and kebabs. In American English, kebab with no qualification refers to shish kebab cooked on a skewer, whereas in Europe it refers to doner kebab. In the Middle East, however, kebab (popularly called kebap) refers to meat that is cooked over or next to flames; large or small cuts of meat, or even ground meat; it may be served on plates, in sandwiches, or as dürüm.
The traditional meat for kebap is lamb, but depending on local tastes and religious prohibitions, other meats may include beef, goat, chicken, pork or fish. Like other ethnic foods brought by travellers, the kebap has remained a part of everyday cuisine in most of the Eastern Mediterranean and South Asia
Zataar Naan is unlike any bread- housing innumerous herbs on itself. Paired with Mutton Kimzi Lobye, it tastes heavenly. The latter is succulent mutton cooked with white cranberry juice and in-house spices. If one wants to go for vegetarian items, they can surely go for cranberry beans curry- cranberry beans soaked overnight and cooked on low flame with fresh herbs, spices and seasoned with lemon. It can be complimented with Zataar Naan as well.
The Turkish deserts were truly a sweet "delight". They have the most exotic gourmets. Some of them are: Turkish Rice Pudding, Mango Halwa, Malai Firni, Doodhi Halwa, Sheer Khurma, Sultan Lokumu, etc.
The staff was very efficient and suggested the best Turkish delights. They always had a smile on and were ready to help.
It is the flavour of turkey that will bring one back here time and again.
Great discovery. Great write up.
