MUD CAFE, RASHBEHARI AVENUE, KOLKATA.

The legendary Debabrata Biswas, popularly known as George-da, had lived at 174E, Rashbehari Avenue. A few years back, Arnab Mitra and Ananya Mitra took the initiative of preserving this prestigious gift, by turning it into a beautiful and homely Cafe. It's not any ordinary Cafe one would assume it to be.  Ever green Rabindra-sangeets sang by George-da are played at all times. It truly brings out the Bangliana in one.

The ground floor used to be his living room, which has now been converted into the Cafe kitchen along with 3 tables. The phrase "wall of fame" is really brought to life. The first wall one would encounter is filled with innumerable accolades, awards, and George-da's other lifetime worth of honor. The windows were still covered with khosh-khosh, as one would know to be sunshades in English.
Two flight of stairs led to the next floor, the wall being covered with photos of famous movies from the golden era- Pather Panchali, Jalsaghar, Teen Kanya, Devi, Ghare Baire and more. The walls were also decorated with painted woodcarved items, painted mud plates and bowls- all being specializations of Bengal. It is heard that this was the room where George-da used to have students who took vocal classes from him. There is an entire corner dedicated to the arts of Bengal ranging from sarees, to cups and saucers.

Coming to the food, the variation in the food items is not very vast, but not very poor either. It's extremely enjoyable. Most creative one being the fish roll- katla, prawn wrapped in bhetki. Other delicacies are- the Daab mojito, which truly refreshes the mind, body and soul. Perfect after a tiring day, or even to just sit back and relax. Veg pasta here comes in two choices- in red or white sauces, according to one's preference. The second flush darjeeling tea truly flushes down all the tireness and exhaust of the day.
Last but not the least is the Vietnamese Coffee. It is different that other coffees in its bitterness, which is comparatively a lot higher.  The staff was well mannered, kind and very hospitable. There was an assist button which could be pressed and staff could be summoned.

This place is the definition of art, the most reputable one which must be protected at all cost. One must visit it for the nostalgia, for experiencing history, more than they should for the food.
